About This Act : |
Navicula was formed in 1996 in Bali, Indonesia. Navicula are: Robi (vocals, guitar), Dankie (guitar), Made (bass), and Gembull (drums). The name Navicula was inspired by a type of single celled golden algae, which is shaped like a small ship (in Latin Navicula means small ship). Their music has a grunge rock undertone, but is combined with many other genres of sound, such as ethnic, psychedelic, alternative, progressive, and straightforward rock. The band`s lyrics are heavy with activism messages of Peace, Love and Freedom. Navicula use their music as a media to campaign for urgent environmental and social issues which affect Indonesia and the world. They use their influence in the media and among their fanbase to encourage positive action and social change in youth culture. Their most recent campaign is to raise awareness about deforestation in Indonesia. Last September, Navicula toured Borneo with Greenpeace and are currently working with footage from the Borneo Tour to edit a full length music-documentary about the destruction of the rainforest. In their environmental action, Navicula have partnered with Greenpeace, Rainforest Action Network, WALHI, Centre for Orangutan Protection, and Sawit Watch. In 2004 Navicula was signed with Sony-BMG and released their 4th album, Alkemis. But, in 2007 they released their 5th album, Beautiful Rebel, independently and returned to following their ideals through the indie music scene. Navicula are currently working on their 7th full-length studio album titled "Love Bomb" to be released spring 2013. Navicula is based in Bali, but regularly hold national and international tours. In 2012 alone they toured across Indonesia performing in Sumatera, Java, Borneo, and Bali, and managed 2 trips to North America: Canada in Sept and recording and touring accross the USA this Nov-Dec 2012. In January 2013 Navicula held their first Australian Tour. In 2012 Navicula won the prestigious Rode Rocks band competition – out of 500 videos from 43 countries, Navicula`s single "Metropolutan" made it to number one! The prize is to record at legendary Record Plant Studios in LA, and the recordings will be on the tracklist of Navicula`s next album.Navicula`s music is strongly influenced by alternative 90`s rock, especially grunge/seattle-sound, through bands such as Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and Nirvana. But what makes their music so unique is their condition of beginning in the melting-pot of modern Bali and having the opportunity to mold their creativity out of contrasts so extreme. |
